Certificate Course

INTRODUCTION

The Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health is designed by the Social Services Department of the Career Development Institute to meet the specific needs of this occupational discipline. The successful completion of this programme is a prerequisite for entry into the Associate Degree Programme in Occupational Safety and Health. There is a great demand for individuals who are equipped with knowledge, skills and competences in Occupational Safety and Health.

TARGET GROUP

Managers, Supervisors, Safety and Health Committee Members are equally as critical to the advancement of Safety and Health practice as the Front Line staff such as the teams from Maintenance, Security and Receptionist. This programme will connect employers and employees with relevant research and underpin the knowledge and skills needed to improve safety and health practice in a wide variety of occupational areas.

UNITS TO BE COVERED

LEVEL 1

  1. English for Communication.

  2. Introduction to Computers.

  3. Safety, Security & Health Hygiene.

  4. Safety & Health Practice.

  5. Risk Reduction.

LEVEL 2

  1. English for Academic Purposes.

  2. Mathematics 101.

  3. Emergency Procedures.

  4. Conducting Safety & Health Surveys.

  5. Environmental Protection.

ASSESSMENT

 

Each unit will have Methods of Assessment which will include: 

  • Observation reports by the Assessor.

  • Copies of written communications with customers.

  • Witness testimonies from Managers.

  • Case Histories and Personal Statement.

  • A professional discussion with your Assessor.

 

PRE-REQUISITES

 

Secondary School Education or
CXC English Grade 1, 2 or 3.



INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH

 

This course will involve a mix of

lectures, discussions and practical 

exercises. To benefit fully, students’ 

participation in all aspects of the course is required.

Students must: 

  • Attend all lectures.

  • Prepare for lectures.

  • Contribute to discussions.
