Caribbean Vocational Qualification

INTRODUCTION

This course will equip students with the essential knowledge and skills to work in the childcare industry. It will provide students with the tools and techniques needed to support the development and learning of children.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • To provide individuals with the support and knowledge to effectively aid in the development of children throughout their developmental stages. 

  • To provide observation and interpretation skills required to sensitively handle domestically abused children.

  • To reiterate the importance of maintaining a safe environment for children that is conducive to language and cognitive development. 

  • To equip participants with entrepreneurial techniques to start private daycare services.

UNITS TO BE COVERED



In order to meet the standards for this qualification, individuals will need to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Apply basic communication skills.

  • Perform interactive workplace communication.

  • Care for children’s physical needs.

  • Facilitate play and Leisure.

  • Support the ‘rights’ and safety of children within duty care requirements.

  • Maintain a child oriented environment.

  • Deliver quality customer service.

  • Carry out data entry and retrieval procedures.

  • Promote children’s sensory and motor development.

  • Facilitate children’s language and cognitive development.

  • Prepare nutritionally balanced meals for children.

  • Foster and enhance children’s social enhancement.

  • Foster children self-help skills.

  • Assist children with medication.

  • Facilitate the appropriate management of children’s behavior.

  • Maintain the safety and well-being of children.

  • Care for babies.

  • Care for children.

  • Facilitate children’s creative expression through art, music and movement.

  • Observe, document, interpret and use information about children.

  • Facilitate the development of exceptional children.

EXAMINATION

 

Assessment of the course is determined by course work which accounts for 40% of the overall grade.  As well as the final written examination which accounts for 60%.

 

PRE-REQUISITES

 

  • English 101.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH

 

This course will involve a mix of lectures, discussions and presentations. To benefit fully, a student’s participation in all aspects of the course is required.

Students must:

  • Attend all lectures

  • Prepare for lectures

  • Contribute to all discussions
